About this blog

Marina Bay Sands gardens, Singapore

At the time of writing this (February 2013), I’m new to blogging. I don’t know how this will work out. My intention is to blog about things in the media and in my life that intrigue, irritate or perplex me. Mostly, I aim to post on the following topics:

  • the relationships between (popular) culture and (world) politics
  • everyday language use and images that catch my eye
  • processes of militarisation and securitisation
  • US politics, society and foreign policy
  • gender issues, including everyday sexism
  • the politics of higher education and research funding
  • innovative teaching and learning practices (pedagogy)

However, as I said, I’m new. Because of the issues that concern me in a professional context, I may focus more on the themes of the voluntary sector, civil society and civic participation. Who knows. I might just end up blogging about walking holidays, uploading photos of kittens and linking to The Guardian website. In any case, I’ll update this page again when it’s become clear which way things have gone.

Oh, before I forget, a note about commenting: it’s absolutely encouraged, and I’ll be overjoyed if you do, but let’s keep things polite. I don’t want to get scared off my own site.
